CAN THIS BE TRUE?

I read recently in THE HVAC&R Industry newsletter from ASHRAE that people are being affected by what they call the "Snackwell Effect".  It was said by Portland State University's Loren Lutzenhiser that people who buy energy-efficient appliances  may overuse them.  Thus not really saving energy.  They call it the "Snackwell Effect" after dieters who binge on Snackwell's lower-calorie cookies.  Amazing.

Good Reading

One of my good friends and recruiting partners, Andrea Ploscowe, recently published an article entitled: Helpful tips for the Newly Unemployed.  I will have it as a link on my website in a few days, but if you would like a copy before that, please e-mail me at newsletter@jrwalters.com requesting one and I will e-mail it to you.

Technology - Social Networks

Okay - I may be a bit behind the technology ball, but am working on catching up.  I have had an account with LinkedIn for quite some time and this past week not only updated my profile, but joined a number of other social networks.  I have even found some of my old friends and business partners.  It is really amazing stuff.  I am now a member of  Facebook, My Space, Ning, Plaxo and Twitter.  It was a little disconcerning when I received e-mails that I was being followed on Twitter, but soon I will learn to Tweat with the best of them.  Please feel free to add me to your friends list.

HAPPY SPRING!

March winds blew through to bring us into the second quarter of 2009.  As the second quarter begins we are starting to see a little improvement in the stock market.  This past week was a good one.  As the stock market continues to strengthen, we should see a bottoming out of unemployment rate.  Listening to the talking heads, things are still on a downhill slide, but as a work-a-day employment recruiter, I see job opportunities surfacing every day.

ECONOMY TODAY AND YESTERDAY

This past week, I had the privilege to hear Steve Kroft speak at our local Economics Club.  When asked about the recent closing of a number of newspapers, he spoke to the fact that advertising is what supports all the media and news is what sells papers.  From that statement it really pulls together the fact that the media bases their advertising rates on circulation, circulation grows when there is news that sells papers. We as humans seem to be drawn to the sensational news stories (how many laid off, plants closing, murders, natural disasters - not how many were hired, what new plant opened or truly feel good stories). Thus that is why we hear the negative stories from the talking heads.  Point is, don't always believe what you hear or read.  In fact, that brings up another topic.  Have you compared today's news with the news from the early 70's and early 80's?  Many of you probably won't remember those days or were even born then, but here are just a few of the headlines we located from those "good old days" And yes I remember all of them.
SPIKING ENERGY PRICES
24% MORTAGE INTEREST RATES
HOUSING PRICES FALL 12%
OIL EMBARGO
GAS RATIONING
WAGE FREEZE
CHRYSLER CORPORATION LOANS GUARANTEED BY TREASURY
10% UNEMPLOYMENT
RAMPANT INFLATION
As you can see, those were the headlines that sold newspapers and TV news stories then, perhaps that puts today's headlines in perspective.
Good new today is - Interest rates are at the lowest they have ever been
Entrepreneurs are developing new businesses every day
Business are adjusting their business models and products - I just heard of an RV upholstery company that has taken stock and is now producing handbags from the fabrics.

As a good friend of mine once told me,  Employment is a bus trip - once you get off one bus another will be along is a few minutes to hop on.
