New Year
Diets
We can't have a New
Year newsletter without talking about diets.
Just look at all the magazine covers in the
grocery check out line. A survey was
conducted recently about providing cookies at
meetings in the board room. It found
80% say cookies improve the
quality and outcome of a meeting,
50% take 2 cookies per meeting,
18% say cookies with chocolate
are best to soften the blow of bad news.
Well there you have it.
Throw out all those magazines that say you
shouldn't eat cookies and listen to what the
business world really thinks about the importance
of
cookies.

EMPLOYMENT OUTLOOK
The outlook for
employment in 2009 is very difficult to
predict. There are many unknown factors, but
even when we hear the unemployment rate of 9% in
some of our states, that means that 91% are
employed. And that is not all bad.
I have been
conducting an unofficial survey
with clients and financial researchers and
they are predicting that by the middle of
2nd quarter employment will pick up. They
are telling me that by 3rd quarter we will see
availability of jobs continuing to grow.
Much of this is based on the proposed stimulus
package that the government is putting
together. Infrastructure dollars should be a
real boost to the civil engineering world and all
the other professions they will touch.
For those that are currently
unemployed, under employed or plain unhappy with
their current employment situation this is a great
time to plan for the new opportunities coming
forward in the next few months. Take time
now to develop your "sales" package. 1 - Rework
your resume so that it gives a good taste of
your abilities in 2 or 3 pages. 2 -
Include dates of employment, job title, position
duties and documentable accomplishments (how you
made or saved your company money - percentage or
dollar figures are the best detail). Include
your education, degrees and licensing 3-
Prepare a project list with project, date of
project, cost of project and your responsibility
with the project. - this placed on a
separate spread sheet is a plus. 4 - Obtain
updated training in your field, obtain
certifications or licensing (if available).
In other words make good use of this lull and you
will be ready for the employment boom that is sure
to be just around the
corner.
